Scandal? What Scandal?
Essentially in a nutshell...
The British Government decided that Caribbean migrants from the period of time between 1948 - 1970 no longer automatically qualified for a legal right to remain in the UK if they could not prove a legal entitlement to their residing status.
This would all be justified if the Government had not originally decided that the non-working age children of Caribbean migrants who would have been minors at the time did not require documentation or passports to enter the UK. (Hmmm... Yes I hear you say)
So then came this 'Hostile Environment Policy' hand in hand with an anti-immigrant sentiment that the media was actively being perpetuated throughout the Online and off-line media outlets. The problem with this is that it was indiscriminate to the same offspring of the Caribbean migrants that were asked to come and help to re-build this same country that the British Government was now trying to 'cleanse'.
It was a 'Scandal' because the Home Office actively sought to target the weakest migrant group which was the Caribbean community. This group was sufficiently weaker than other Commonwealth members mainly due to the fact that the now older offspring did not have birth certificates, naturalisation documents or proof of boarding on their parents entry papers. There was zero compassion for the investment and sacrifice that the Caribbean families made for England, Britain, the UK.
Oh did we mention that landing cards were destroyed and lost by the British Government, one of probably the only ways to prove the legitimacy of permissible stay.
There were a few resignations when this scandal came to a head and a lot of denial of responsibility.
